The Rear View photo column may be on the back page of Petersen’s Hunting magazine, but we’re pretty sure most of you flip right to it when your monthly issue shows up. Each month we’ve featured one of our craziest, most impressive or otherwise hilarious photos for your enjoyment.
Now, we’re giving them all to you in one amazing gallery, highlighting the very best the hunting world has to offer.
The Fish Are Biting
Nothing says bowfishing fun like going to work on Monday morning and getting asked, "Is that a hickey or did you get mauled by a ravenous Asian carp?"
Stag Party
"I was out looking for big deer to photograph. I hadn't seen anything of size, but when we drove back to town, this guy was just bounding along the main road, heading straight toward a polygamous colony," says photographer John Hafner. "We didn't know if they let single bucks in, but it's worth a shot, right?"
Wapi-Tea Time
Relaxing Alberta: A scenic place to enjoy superb dining, four-star lodgings, and front-row seating to a rut-crazed bull elk flogging the shrubbery with all of his 300-plus inches of antler.
Floral Derangement
A sunflower patch in early September is as close to Shangri-La as a dove hunter can get. When magic does happen in this wingshooters' field of dreams, we hope you aren't too far out in left field to get in some shooting. Just remember: If you look ridiculous enough, they will come.
Quiet on the Green
September is a fine time to hit the greens. The air is crisp, the mosquitoes have died off, and the majestic elk are entering their breeding season. Grab your clubs and head off to Banff National Park. There is no better time or place for a rut and putt combo. I hope she earns a congratulatory bugle.
Off with His Head
Acting as judge, jury and executioner, this rut-crazed Wisconsin brawler serves up a slice of guillotine justice to a perceived rival. It's a beheading that would please even Charles-Henri Samson, the chief executioner during the French Revolution.
Croc in the Water
At the Mara River in Kenya, Tom Martineau snapped this brilliant photo of pandemonium, as zebras and wildebeests panic with a croc snapping at their heels.
