Keith Manca, Southern Kansas

Wall of Tines

For the past seven years Keith and his brother Anthony have been traveling to southern Kansas to bowhunt. At the end of his 2006 hunt, Keith placed a tree stand in a small finger of woods that extended to a CRP field. This well-used funnel was where he planned to hunt.

On Nov. 5, 2007, Keith hunted the stand for the first time. He was amazed at the big buck sign around it. Just before dark, he spotted a giant buck chasing a doe, but the deer were well out of range. Despite using a variety of calls, he could not turn the big buck around.

Keith was back on stand November 7. About an hour after daylight, he spotted a large buck across the CRP field some 500 yards away. The buck was steadily walking toward him. As it got closer, Keith realized that it was the same buck he had seen earlier and that it carried “a wall of tines.”

The buck continued on its course and finally stepped within fifteen yards before he sudenly turned and started to walk away. Knowing it was now or never, Keith released his arrow and made a perfect shot.

With a net B&C score of 193 2/8, Keith’s incredible 14-point turned out to be the largest typical buck taken by bow in North America in 2007. It’s also the largest main-frame 7x7 ever taken in the Sunflower State!
