Win this Kimber Model 84L Rifle!
Win this Kimber Rifle!
by Ben O’Brien
An African safari—especially your first one—isn’t complete without the right gun. It almost goes without saying.
The rifle my dad used to knock down plains game with Jamy Traut Safaris was as beautiful as it was deadly. The Kimber Model 84L Classic Select Grade in .30-06 is set up with a French walnut stock with an ebony for-end tip that is carefully shaped, then checkered and finished by hand. The rifle weighs in at just a tick over six pounds (two ounces to be exact) and comes with a one-inch Pachmayr Decelerator pad to dampen this light rifle’s felt recoil. Add in a 24-inch match grade barrel that is both pillar and glass bedded to the stock and a full-length Mauser claw extractor, and you’ve got a fast, accurate little number.

Perched on top of this Kimber was equally solid glass. We employed Weaver’s Super Slam 2-10 x 42 riflescope with their proprietary EBX ballistic reticle to push shots well past the 200-yard average on Namibian plains game. The fully multi-coated lenses come standard and pull-up turrets make it easy to adjust without having to screw off caps.
It was a dream package for our ultimate father/son hunt.
Now that dream package can be yours. That’s right, we’re giving away the actual rifle my dad used last September in Namibia. Unfortunately for you, dear reader, this rifle is more than authentic. It might just come with a little red sand in the action. Just kidding, we cleaned it up and it’s ready to ship.
All you need to do tell us your favorite family hunting story. Write up the how/why/when and who of your best memories with family and friends, and our editor panel will pick our favorite story and send the winner the rifle/scope package. We’ll be judging based on how much your passion for hunting comes through in your writing, as well as looking for originality. Good luck!
