The iconic gold ring affixed around the bell of Leupold riflescopes has been a signifier of rugged reliability and premium performance for far longer than I have been alive. Leupold’s newest addition to the gold ring lineup, the VX-4HD, delivers on that same lasting promise of performance and reliability packed inside a feature-rich riflescope. Better yet, they did so while still being able to pass on savings to the end consumer.

Featuring a 4:1 zoom ratio, the VX-4HD line offers shooters increased versatility at a variety of ranges. In a real-world application, that versatility allows me to effectively use the same scope for everything from extended range, cross-canyon shots that I am accustomed to out West to close-quarters encounters in the whitetail woods. As luck would have it, I put both extremes to the test last fall with an early model of the VX-4HD and was not disappointed.

Upon the scope's arrival, I went through my usual protocol. I inspected it, double-checked turret tracking and zero stops, and then meticulously mounted the 4-16x50 VX-4HD to my Browning X-Bolt 2. At the range, it sighted in quickly and the Leupold/Browning combo was printing sub-MOA groups with Winchester’s new Long Range Supreme ammunition. I was preparing for a Midwest whitetail hunt, but couldn’t help but go stretch out the legs of this setup on some rock chucks close to home. With some quick ballistic calculations, a pair of rock chucks taken at just over 500 yards validated the setup. At that distance, the 16x magnification was more than enough power to execute a precision-type shot at a small target. Had it been a buck, bull or bruin on the opposite side of the canyon, I would have had a punched tag and a full freezer.

Custom Dial System on Leupold VX-4HD riflescope

Ballistic calculator apps are handy for quick turnarounds, such as my rock chuck excursion, but it is hard to argue the simplicity of Leupold’s custom CDS turret system. The VX-4HD features Leupold’s CDS-ZL2 dial, allowing shooters to customize the ballistics of their rifle setup into a single turret for rapid dial and target engagement. Range, dial and shoot. It really is that simple. And, your VX-4HD comes with a free custom turret. All you have to do is compile the necessary data (bullet B.C., velocity, etc.), submit it to Leupold and your turret will be delivered to your mailbox (this is made easy by allowing you to enter your ballistic data on their website). It is also worth noting that the CDS-ZL2 turret features a push-button ZeroLock system while providing shooters two full rotations of elevation adjustment. Windage adjustment is underneath a capped turret, but is easily accessible.

In terms of glass quality, Leupold never leads its customers astray. The VX-4HD features their Elite Optical System, maximizing light transmission, minimizing glare and delivering clarity at all hours of the day, especially during the crucial hours of dawn and dusk. Your Leupold scope lenses are engineered to perform in all elements, including snow, rain and fog.

Other notable features include the addition of a stout integrated throw lever, Fast-Focus eyepiece and an illuminated reticle on a few of the VX-4HD models. Those with illuminated reticles utilize Motion Sensor Technology to conserve battery and allow shooters to choose between 8 illumination settings with a simple push of a button.

Unlike the cross-canyon scenario when I was shooting rock chucks, the whitetail woods provide the exact opposite. Slipping into my blind under the guise of darkness I had no idea what to expect come daylight. As the dark sky turned gray, the towering trees that lined the food plot I was sitting reminded me I was a long way from home and well out of my normal “comfort zone”. The sun had started to break the distant horizon, but the cove I was sitting remained much darker under the towering shadows of dense vegetation. The target buck I had been shown a picture of the previous evening caught me off guard, slipping past my blind a mere 15 yards in front of me. Not able to move, I watched as the buck walked past and down the treeline. I hoped he would stop but it became readily apparent that buck was on a mission. With my VX-4HD already turned down to 4x, I raised the rifle, let out a slight whistle and sent Winchester’s new 140-grain BC Max bullet down range as the buck paused just long enough to examine his surroundings. The buck made it to the wood line and piled up.

Coming out of the scope I realized it was still quite dark in my secluded food plot. It had been legal shooting light for nearly an hour before I shot, but a quick glance back through the VX-4HD confirmed that it in a very real sense, it had lit up the scene before me. On 4x, the scene through the riflescope was no doubt brighter than my natural eyesight perceived without the aid of glass. I was impressed.

My testing proved impressive results albeit its small sample size. But that came as no surprise given the proven track record of gold ring scopes. What does come as a pleasant surprise is that this feature-rich scope, capable of taking on nearly any hunting pursuit across the world, is available for a reasonable price. Depending on model, prices range from $799.99-$1,199.99. And, the VX-4HD comes with Leupold’s promise of “guaranteed to perform for life”. What more do you need?
