Trijicon: Latest Scopes Give You an Edge on Deer

Finding success in taking big, old deer often comes down to being able to make an accurate shot in the final minutes of legal shooting hours when those savvy old bucks come out of hiding. Doing so requires an optic that is up to the task. It's not enough to have a "bright" scope that allows you to see the deer. AccuPoint

The AccuPoint line of scopes use a clever combination of ambient light, transmitted via fiber optics, and tritium to provide an aiming point that you never have to worry about being "off" at an inopportune moment.  The fiber optics are exposed by a window on the ocular lens housing; by rotating the illumination dial, the end user can control how much light the fiber optics are exposed to and alter the "brightness" of the reticle.  Reticles are available in red, green and amber and a host of different reticles are available.  Reticle choices range from a simple triangle and post to a traditional crosshair as well as MOA-Dot, MIL-Dot, Circle-Crosshair, and German #4 configurations.

Six different models are available, ranging from the 1-4x24mm to the 5-20x50mm.  In terms of speed for close range shots, the 1x models (1-4x24mm and 1-6x24mm) are hard to beat.  At 1x, these scopes can be every bit as fast to use as a red dot optic but offer the versatility of adding magnification when it is needed.  If you do any hunting in thick brush or timber, these scopes are worth some serious consideration.  The three scopes that fit best into the traditional deer hunting niche are the 3-9x40mm, 2.5-12.5x42mm, and the 2.5-10x56mm models.  Each of these scopes offers a wide magnification range, useful from point blank to hundreds of yards.  The 5-20x50mm is a large and powerful scope, suitable for true long-range work.

Similar to the AccuPoint in many respects, the AccuPower offers a bit more flexibility for the end user and most models are available at a slightly lower price range.  The AccuPower uses battery-driven LED illumination, which offers some advantages.  The primary benefit of the LED illumination is the wider range of control over the brightness of the illumination as compared to the AccuPoint.

The second advantage is the ability to illuminate a greater portion of the reticle: while the AccuPoint only illuminates the center of the reticle, the AccuPower is capable of illuminating both the center and some of the ballistic elements of the reticle.  Let us take, for example, the 2.5-10x56mm AccuPower scope with MOA crosshair reticle.  This reticle provides windage and elevation holds that provide the shooter with precision aiming points for long-range shots.  Instead of only illuminating the center of the reticle, the aiming points are illuminated to the 10 MOA marks. This means that the user can make a low-light shot using an illuminated precision hold.  This feature could be the difference between success and failure on a trophy animal at first or last light and is a key advantage of the AccuPower over many of the illuminated scopes on the market.

Which model is right for you, depends heavily on your own wants, needs, and hunting style.  If you are the kind of individual that doesn't want to be bothered with checking and replacing batteries, the AccuPoint is probably the right choice for your needs.  On the other hand, if you want a bit more flexibility in terms of brightness and you may use the reticle for holdovers in low light, the AccuPower may be a better fit.
